This was the first design I knew I just HAD to make. Let me tell you, I had total flash backs to college. :) The things I loved about this molecule were the expressions and the ubiquitous red party cups. They are mandatory at every kegger and frat party. The relationship between the atoms was really happy and playful. That's what I wanted to capture. The glory days, lol.
I made a yellow cake and fresh buttercream and blended them to make individual cake balls for each atom. I colored all of the fondant by hand. The hardest part was actually figuring out what to use for the bonds and the arms. After some trial and error. No gumpaste didn't work. Extruding it and then trying to get them to stay straight not too mention thin was a pain in the ____. Licorice was way too thick and if I cut it down, it just look funny. So I finally decided to use pasta and painted it with black food coloring.
While the cake balls were chilling and the bonds drying, I made the cups. Those little suckers were hard! they needed to be so tiny but still recognizable. So I got the idea to top them with a white circle for the white rim of the cup and then painted the inside of the circle with brown food coloring to resemble beer. Of course, now that I think about it, it would have been seriously cool if I could have put foam on the beer but that could have taken thinks too far. :)I added the letters and let the cups dry.
When the cake balls were firm, I covered them with the correct colors of fondant and let them dry. I used a food color marker to draw on the faces.
It was time to assemble the molecule. I wanted to evoke a college/school theme so I used a black cutting board that looked just like a blackboard. I skewered all the atoms. It's a good thing they were all loaded from all that beer and then arranged them. I used additional little pieces of fondant for their hands and tried to create the right angles to show the relationships between them all. I think it came out great. Let's partay!
