I made this cake for my friend's 20th birthday. I thought I'd have plenty of time to make it, but it turned out she'd been sending texts to my old number, so I didn't find out until the morning of her party that I needed to make and decorate a cake by 5pm!! I got up fairly quickly and headed for the kitchen...
The sponge is a chocolate cake, covered and filled with chocolate orange butter cream. My mum thought Cointreau would be better than orange juice, so we kept adding it to the butter cream. It didn't taste very orangey, but it had plenty of alcohol!
For the decoration, I used shop bought roll out icing and used gel food colours to colour it. I've done a fair few cakes using this method, rolling out icing and cutting the shapes that make up the image using a craft knife. Then I mix the food colouring with water and use a brush to paint the details and the outlines (very good technique for anime and cartoon characters). I cut out the decoration while the cake was cooking and cooling. After covering the cake with butter cream and then covering with orange icing I brushed a little water on the surface of the cake so that the pieces I put on top would stick to it. Hell of a scary experience trying to relocate the woman from the tray I constructed her on to the top of the cake!!! Luckily all went well and she went on ok.
I started at about 10 and finished at around 4 and made it in time for the party!!! It was very much enjoyed :D Who doesn't love chocolate cake??
