Description
Many moons ago when I was a little girl I was obsessed with Michael Jackson. To this day I still love him dearly, and was very excited when I originally saw Threadless release the Beat It shirt. I always wanted a Beat It jacket growing up, and this shirt is absolutely perfect.
I actually made this cake a week before the King of Pop passed away, and I felt it would be an absolutely beautiful tribute to enter this in his honor. He was my true artistic inspiration in life, so this cake really means a lot to me.
My mom and I spent an entire weekend creating our own fondant, icing and cake from scratch for this project. It was made from three red velvet cakes, one 9x13 cake and two smaller 9 inch square cakes, with icing in between and our homemade fondant on top.
I colored a large batch of fondant red with icing color to cover the base and sleeves of the cakes, and used white fondant for the zippers and decoration. I ran small line marker across parts of the red fondant to make seams in the jacket. I then painted the pieces with silver fleck icing color, then used an icing writer to put the black detail on the zippers.
I felt this to be a fitting tribute to my favorite shirt, and had a lot of fun making it. It took around, what my guess would be, around 15 hours or so to complete the cake. It tasted pretty good if I do say so myself, very red and very velvety.
