Rabbit Valley cake by Lauren Babis

Description

CAVEAT LECTOR, this is an UNFINISHED cake.

=(

Cake and humidity are not friends, more like enemies, not even frenemies.
Everything was going along great with this cake until my refusal to pay for air conditioning turned my apartment into a jungle.
After one day of great progress I was full of hope that I might actually have a chance in this competition. Everything seemed to be going along smoothly and how I wanted it to go. I unfortunately had to live my life and go to my job for the day. Upon my return home my cake had decided to crack all over and melt. This was devastating. There was nothing I could do, it was out of my hands. Sugar is so temperamental in hot, humid weather.

Time was running out so I ended up throwing what I had made on to the cake and took some pictures. Pieces were falling off the cake as I was photographing it. I wanted to explode.
I would have loved to finish all the minor details. It is so hard to stay positive when cracks are staring you in the face.

As for the construction, I made a basic sponge cake and vanilla buttercream. My fondant and gum paste were store bought. Gel color diluted with vodka was used for coloring. The rabbit and monkey(s) have wire for internal support. The sun was also made out of rice krispie treats that lasted a hot minute.... after I finished taking photos I slowly watched it roll off the top of the cake onto the floor.

Overall I had a fun time making the cake. I watched so many seasons of different t.v. shows. My friends enjoyed eating it while I stood there in awe of my failure.
