Ugly Drawings cake by christine sasso

Description

Hey everyone! My name is Christine and I am super excited that after a few days of trying to figure out what cake/s to make, I finally picked a few and actually finished ONE lol!!! Yay!! I decided to start off with a 2D cake and even though it’s usually a lot easier than the 3D cakes I wanted to do one with a lot of details…so what better than the ugly drawings?:) I couldn’t decide if I wanted to do the buttercream transfer or the RIT (royal icing transfer) but after thinking about it for awhile I figured if I wanted better/cleaner details I would suck it up and pipe it with the royal icing.

I printed out a larger copy of the “ugly drawing” picture then taped it on to a large foam board. Saran wrap was then placed over the entire picture and taped down at all corners to avoid slipping.

The painting started a week before the actually baking of the cake. I figured I had to let the royal icing dry for a long time. I made my royal icing (first the black) which consisted of powdered sugar, egg whites, and A LOT of black food coloring! After two bottles I thought it would never turn black! But it did, and then the piping began?.

I started by using a thicker RI (royal icing), put it in a medium sized piping bag, and used a size 2 piping tip so I could outline the picture neatly. I spent a few hours a day for about 4 days just piping the outline black and allowing it to dry. After it was dry, I mixed my white royal icing and made it a little thinner by adding a little water. I used a larger tip (3) to allow more icing to come out so I could fill in the picture. This also took me a few days. Once the entire picture was finished and dried, I carefully turned the picture over on a soft foam board and covered the entire back of it with royal icing to make it a little thicker.

I allowed it to dry for about two days to make sure there was NO chance of messing it up?

It was finally time to bake!!! Yum!! I decided to go for a chocolate fudge cake with chocolate buttercream, after all, who doesn’t love chocolate right?:) I greased my large sheet pan, poured the cake batter in, and allowed it to bake for about 40 minutes. While the cake was baking I whipped up my buttercream, and started tinting some white fondant black (for my border). The cake was then removed from the oven, cooled, leveled, and covered with chocolate buttercream.

White fondant was then rolled out and used to cover the entire cake. A small amount of royal icing was placed on the top of the cake to hold the painting in place. The painting was then placed in the center of the cake and black fondant used to make a border for the picture.

Once the cake was finished it was packed up and taken to work for my coworkers and I to enjoy? Thank you so much for looking!
