Description
My cake is based on the lovebirds design. This is the first attempt I've ever had at making a threadcake, so I wanted to go with something fairly simple! I chose this design because I have a heart-shaped baking pan, so could do the shape of the birds easily. I made the cake out of butter cake mix, and did the batter in "rainbow" style with pink, blue and purple layers. The next day, I iced it using a WHOLE HEAP of buttercream icing. I made up light pink and blue, and after had applied those parts to the cake, made up the darker parts by gradually adding more food colouring to the icing as I went. I also used the different shades of pink and blue icings mixed together in various ratios to make the purples in the middle. A fresh batch of plain-coloured icing was used for the eyes and the heart shape, and I smoothed it all out with a knife dipped in hot water.
Much icing was consumed, and I ran around the house like a loon for about an hour afterwards on a major sugar high before crashing into a heap! There was food die EVERYWHERE but it was fun! I took the cake into my lab the next day, and it got eaten pretty quickly. Cue another sugar high, though this time spread over half a dozen people! Though we discovered that blue icing stains your teeth pretty badly. I don't want to know what it's going to come out looking like tomorrow!
