Description
This was my first cake ever entered into a contest (and the first on threadless!). I thought this shirt was hilarious so I got one for my husband who's a nerdy scientist/engineer. I wanted to add my own take by adding partying atoms around the side.
Overall, I spent probably 20 hours on the cake spread out over about 3 days. The cake is a 1-2-3 cake with chocolate butter cream icing. The decorations on the top are fondant with some of the smaller features being royal icing (Bonds between atoms, arms, etc).
The atoms were colored by mixing the coloring directly into the fondant. The finer features such as facial expressions, etc were painted on using a brush. I was surprised how close I was able to get the gray background to match the shirt -- it took a LOT of black food coloring. I painted color onto the beer mug, which is fondant. To match the beer color, I had my husband crack open a beer at 10am. Breakfast beer!
This was a blast and I can't wait to try another!
