Second Sun cake by Jenna Winkeller

Description

Threadless has several amazing designs so I found it very difficult to select just one to transform into a cake. I wanted to make a 2D cake, which helped narrow down the vast number of choices. “Second Sun”, in particular, stood out the moment I saw it. I loved the ironic scene of the cheery birds with a nuclear explosion in the background. I thought the different elements and colors of the design would look great as a cake! I decided to make a “Citrus Explosion” cake (orange swirl cake with lemon buttercream covered in rolled fondant). The design is made from homemade fondant and gum paste that is painted with food coloring. First, I created the background with gray fondant and painted it with blue and black food coloring. Then, I cut out the mushroom cloud from gum paste and painted it with orange food coloring. I cut out each bird and flower from gum paste and painted them to match the design. I then assembled it all together, attaching each piece with fondant, adding the branches, and putting all the finishing touches on it. I was having so much fun creating this cake that I lost track of how long it actually took to make it... maybe 20 hours in total? My husband and I enjoyed eating this fruity and delicious Threadcake!
