Description
I entered a local dessert competition and received a phone call from our newspaper. They wanted to send a photographer to take some pictures of me making a cake. I didn't have any current projects, so I thought, "What a perfect opportunity to make a Threadcake!" I just love "If On a Winter's Night Young Lovers..." Nature themes are my favorite, and the colors and beautiful simplicity immediately drew my eye.
I chose a 2-d design because I wanted to practice a new technique (for me) of painting on fondant with vodka and gel food colors. I was able to achieve a watercolor-painting look, which is what I used for the sky. I chose to craft the trees and figures out of fondant because I wanted them to be three-dimensional and add texture to the surface of the cake. I had so much fun making the tiny little people! I even made a tiny scarf for one of them!
For me, a cake is an edible canvas. Though I don't mind baking, I choose to put the majority of my time and effort into the decorating process. For this reason, I chose to use a very moist and delicious box cake mix: Duncan Hines Red Velvet cake. It is my favorite. :0) I made my own buttercreme icing to base frost the cake, then I used marshmallow rolled fondant to cover the cake layer and to make the decorations.
I don't know how long it took me to make this cake. When I am creating something, I rarely time myself to see how long anything takes. I feel that it interrupts my creative process. But if I had to guess, I'd say it took me about 3 hours.
I took the cake to a Super Bowl party later that evening. It wasn't exactly Super Bowled themed, but I wanted to make sure that people got to enjoy it. I sure didn't want to eat the whole thing myself! My husband's family helped me eat it. And yes, it was delicious. :0)
