Description
I ran across threadcakes last year just after the contest and I immediately bookmarked it so that I could enter this year. After scanning the list several times I happened across the SUPERnova design and I immediately envisioned the cake I could make...all the crackles around the edges made me think of spun sugar and my mind was made up.
The first step was baking the cakes. I started with a recipe, and of course changed it as I went along, because that is just what I do. So it ended up being a lemon chocolate cake with lemon buttercream icing and marshmallow fondant. Although I will mention that I did pick up some black fondant just because I didn't want to colour my own. I tried Duff's brand from Charm City Cakes and it actually tastes good - worth buying again!
Since this was going to be a taller cake with a smaller base, I did use some wood for the board and screwed in a wooden dowel to keep the cake from wobbling too much. I also decided to use Rice Krispies for the arms and I used a toothpick to secure them to the cake.
For some reason I always decide to make cakes whenever the weather is completely against me. I do not have air conditioning and that poses problems with getting fondant to dry out and such. This time the cake drooped over night, which I was able to fix. But the cape wouldn't dry out at all so it ended up draped down the cake's back instead of flying out behind him. And the sugar...well it lasted maybe 10 mins before it re-liquified. At least I had time to take some pictures!
I made this cake during a heat wave because my family and I were going to a summer pot luck that a friend of mine hosts every year. The cake made it over but didn't make it to dinner, it went super nova and exploded! (Not really, it more fell on its face on to a pan that I had put in front of it.) So the cake was served with a spoon but was thoroughly enjoyed, and I didn't have any leftovers to bring home.
