A Happy Slice of Life

Thanks to Bakerella's latest blog entry, I was reminded of this cool online cake contest and decided that this was the year to enter. "A Happy Slice of Life" was the design that spoke to me because of the bright colors, summery theme, and cute but twisted character. I worked on my entry a little at a time over the course of a week. My kids helped me with different parts of the project along the way. At the last minute, I decided to make it a vanilla rainbow cake inside because my son loves to help with that process and I love the fun of serving a rainbow cake. The most challenging part of the process was creating the watermelon character and detailing all of his black outline with thin strips of black fondant. There are easier methods, but I wanted him to have dimension and saturated colors. I hope you enjoy the photos!
