Description
I am a full time student and have never had any cake decorating instructions, so everything I know I have learned by watching the food network or surfing the internet. This is my first attempt at ever creating a 3D cake sculpture, so I have a lot more to learn, but I had an awesome experience participating in this competition.
For my first attempt at sculpting, it went a lot smoother than I had anticipated. The whole process took me about 10 hours, but it was definitely worth it in the end because the cakes were absolutely delicious!!
So now that you know a little bit about me and how good my cakes tasted, here's a look into how I actually made them...
The base of the cake was flavored caramel apple pie, while the Rhino was flavored mint chocolate. The caramel apple pie cake was mixed with chopped granny smith apples and sugar free caramel syrup and then baked in a 9" by 11" pan. The cake was topped with a caramel flavored buttercream.
The mint chocolate cake was made from a chocolate cake batter mixed with chopped mint M&Ms. The chocolate cakes were crumbled and combined with a peppermint chocolate frosting, which was flavored with peppermint extract, to create a giant cake ball consistency.
To support the weight of the Rhino, rice crispy treats were modeled and then covered in the mint chocolate cake. Pretzel sticks were used for support between segments and the Rhino's tail, as well as the horns on the Rhino's snout.
Fondant was made from scratch and was used to cover the Rhino. The treadmill was made out of fondant, the lines on the belt of the treadmill were formed by a pizza cutter, and the bars of the treadmill were bent lollipop sticks. The poster of the unicorn was painted on a piece of fondant with a vodka/food coloring mixture to prevent bleeding. The painting was glued to a pop-tart with extra caramel buttercream frosting in order to stand it up straight on the cake.
