Description
Last year a friend did the Threadcakes contest, and I knew I wanted to do it this year. I didn't want to pick something too overly detailed due to time constraints, but I did want to play around with a more 3-D structure.
I started with two 9x13 pineapple cakes. Why pineapple, you ask? Well, my 5-year-old wanted pineapple. I carved it into a basic seal shape, and then added some of the scraps back on for the neck/head. I added some fondant for the top part of the head. I added a single dowel down this section for support, and covered in buttercream. And then, tragedy happened. I left the cake out, not realizing my house was a sweltering 82 degrees. Buttercream melted, and the whole front part of the cake collapsed. Not to mention the center sank. I worked and worked to rebuild it, but I could never get the nice original shape back. Finally, I gave in and covered in fondant. I cut some "cracks" into it (perhaps a few too many), added the words on the front, and finally the seal's flippers. At this point, I still hated his head, so I redid it. It definitely did not turn out as nice as I would have liked, but the next 3-D cake will definitely stay in the fridge no matter how cool my house is!
