Rose Marry cake by Karen Wasson

Description

I have never decorated a fancy cake before, and when I saw Threadcakes, I was inspired to give it a go. I chose the design 'Rose Marry' as I was making the cake for a friend's birthday so wanted to make something that she would like.

I first tired my hand at fondant, however it soon became clear that we were not going to be friends. I then turned to chocolate. After a small test, it seemed like it would work.

I printed out a copy of the design and covered it with greaseproof paper. I then melted dark chocolate and spread some over the chunkier parts of the image. After that, I piped on the rest of the design.

I made the chocolate roses by colouring white chocolate yellow, pink/red and green. I formed the base of the flowers using a rose chocolate mould and made extra petals, 'gluing' it all together using dark chocolate.

For the base cake, I made apricot choc-chip and covered it in butter cream icing. The chocolate image was carefully lifted off the paper and placed on top of the cake. I then arranged the roses on top, and added the extra detail.

The proof of the deliciousness was in the eating, there was not a crumb left at the end of the birthday party. All up it took me about a day (spread over about 3, due to my 5 month old baby). I had a lot of fun through the whole process!
