Description
I heard about threadcakes last year, actually I read about it, on the threadless page. I am a graphic design major, so I really love Threadless and would love to have a design printed. Anyway, last year I read about it too late and didn't get a chance to participate which was such a bummer. So this year I immediately started planning when I saw the contest was open again.
My little sister is always part of my baking projects, and she was really excited to help me with this. We knew we wanted to make something based on one of the shirts we own (as we own several actually :P) One of my favorites is Color Wheel and we agreed it would look great on a cake (I'm actually surprised that no one has baked that one yet)
We started by baking two sheets of classic vanilla birthday cake. Because the design is so colorful, we wanted to make the whole cake colorful too, so we added some food coloring to the batter before baking it. Funny story, after it came out of the oven, my other sister (who hates cooking) came in the kitchen and saw the baked sheets of cake and got really excited because she thought the yellow one was winnie the pooh and the pink one was piglet.
We covered the cake with chocolate frosting and then covered it with white fondant. For the color wheel we cut a circle out of fondant and cut it to make the different colors and painted each one with food color. The black part was a strip of fondant painted with black royal icing. The lines of the wheel were made out of white royal icing and the center was made out of fondant.
The cupcakes were Daniela's idea (my little sister) She thought it would make it more cheerful. Also she loves piping frosting so she wanted to pipe them with a star shaped cake tip. But they actually make the cake loook more fun! They were vanilla chocolate chip with vanilla buttercream frosting.
We had some of my friends over to eat the cake (though not all of them wanted to be in the pictures... lol)
My grandma's birthday is coming so we are planning to bake another cake... I hope you enjoy our first entry...
