Art Is My Weapon cake by ReAnne Hinton

Description

I am a college student and would classify myself as a beginner to baking cakes, but whenever there is a cake to be made I make one. My sister sent me the information about thread cakes knowing I would love any opportunity to bake a cake. haha! Over 3 days I made my "Art is My Weapon" Cake.
The first day I spent online finding a t-shirt that inspired me. The next day I went and bought some baking supplies and made the cake and icing. I can never tell the difference between box cake and from-scratch cake so I always use box-funfetti (its like a surprise on the inside!) I did make a vanilla butter cream for the inside layer and a thin outside layer just because I knew I was using fondant and sometimes that isn't the yummiest the eat.
I let the butter cream harden over night and the final day I spent my making marshmallow fondant (thank you Martha Stewart!) In the process of dying the fondant I think I have permanently turned my hands blue! I could be an honorary member of the blue-man group.
After the always scary laying of the fondant--which was hiccup free thankfully--I moved on to making the octopus. He is made out of gum paste and love. This was only my second time working with gum paste so he was a little trickier than I had originally planned, but overall I am super happy with how my cake came out.
I took my cake to my MCAT-prep class. Coincidentally, this is our last week of class so was a great surprise for everyone. The cake was a hit and so good. No one can ever go wrong with funfetti, vanilla butter cream, and a little imagination. When I explained that everything was edible, someone did eat an octopus leg going, "Sugar calamari...YUM".
