Ok... I loved making this cake! I had never seen Threadless before, (although I had heard "cool" kids talking about it ;) when I saw that Bakerella had posted that she would be on the judging team this year. As soon as I saw the contest and that it accepted cake entries from all over the world I was determined to do it! I had been disappointed in another contest that wouldn't accept entries from people outside the US. (even though I am an American, I live in Thailand.) I spent hours that day looking through designs, I think it took me about 3 days before I finally settled on the "Doctor Hoo" design. I mean, Who doesn't love Owl Caricatures, right? WELL I LOVED THEM! I knew my family thought I was crazy for taking on something with so many details and colors, I thought I was crazy in fact, but I just had to do it! I also took the "completely edible" and "The More Cake the Better" concepts very seriously so... I decided to carve all of the owls out of cake! I mean, some fondant owls on top of a cake log is no fun! Lets go all kinds of crazy cake on them!
This cake took me around a week to make. The entire cake is completely edible and almost everything I used was made from scratch. The only support other than cake and fondant was one pretzel in the tallest Owl (Spiky Hair 2nd from the right--His head fell off) All together I made 2 recipes(4 loaf pans) of Cream Cheese pound cake(Which my dad said was the best one he's ever had and that's no wonder considering the amount of calories in it- which I will not reveal here. :) 1 recipe of humidity resistant vanilla/anise buttercream icing (Did I mention I live in Thailand? haha) and a large recipe of homemade marshmallow fondant.
The owls are all individually carved from pound cake, iced, covered in fondant, and hand painted with candy melts. (A symphony of flavors-- dark chocolate, milk chocolate, white chocolate, and peanut butter) It gave them a feathery look and I loved it! There are also fondant accents on the owls, such as the eyes ect.
The Base (the Log and Blue sky) are also carved pound cake, iced, covered in fondant, and hand painted with candy melts. (the front is carved to give it depth, but the back is flat because it needed its own support)I used different brushes to give the wood a grain and the sky a sweeping feeling.
Then the scarf! Oh, the scarf, how I love it. It is fondant, draped and "glued"(with water and meringue powder) on and around the owls and branch. I then painted the stripes on with the candy melts.
I Love making cakes but am not a professional by any means. This is actually only about the 3rd time I have worked with Fondant. The 1st time ever with carving and the first time even making pound cake. I loved it, I feel like Jesus Enabled me to do it. Enjoy! Thanks for the fun competition! I am excited about next year too! Keep it up Threadcakes!
