For my second cake entry, I wanted to do something fun with lots of color, and as a Doctor Who fan, I loved this design! I thought the color scheme was great, and it seemed like a good challenge as someone who hasn't worked much with fondant.
For the cake, I baked simple white cakes, but I added an extra egg for density, and it worked almost too wel - the cakes were pretty solid! (I made another simple cake for my friends and me to eat in case this one was too stale or hard by the time I was done.) I mixed the fondant (with a great non-marshmallow recipe!) and dyed it, which took FOREVER, about 4 hours - those pinks and reds were really tough to get. I put the square cakes in a row and carved them to be the background and covered them with the light blue fondant. Then I put the log on top and covered that with black fondant.
For the owls, I printed out a blown up version of the design and used my window as a light table to trace each owl onto a piece of paper, so I could figure out the pieces of color I'd need to use, and so I could trace the pieces directly. I cut out each owl, placed it on the circular cakes, and cut it out. Then I covered them with frosting, then base colors of fondant, then the fondant details. This was the longest part of the process.
For assembly, I placed the owls above the log, and I was done! This took me about four days total, I started on Friday and finished on Monday. I worked mostly in my dorm room and my dorm's kitchen, which is very small. I had a great time working on this cake. I almost didn't want to cut it!
