Recently Deceased cake by Amanda LaMoy

Description

I had heard of ThreadCakes I believe sometime after their first, and thought it was pretty awesome. The second came and went, and I thought to myself 'I should really do it next year.' Then, in the flurry of what is my life (or lack of one) I find out it's happening a week and a half before the actual deadline. I skimmed through designs trying to find something simple, but not too simple. And there it was - Recently Deceased. Being a fan on Tim Burton's older work, and that fact the the design is just too wonderful, I had to do it. So I got my baking gear, broke out my nearly endless supply (until I use it all on a baking spree, of course) of flour and sugar and got to work. Knocked out in about 8-10 hours or so (I didn't keep very good track...I was on roll!), not including cooling/setting/resting/whatever time. Made with chocolate espresso cake, vanilla Swiss buttercream, marshmallow fondant, and ground almonds. As much work as it was, it was so much fun! I trimmed the cake to mimic the shape on the design. Making the tiny house was quite a pain, but look at how cute it is! Colored the fondant covering the cake in the marshmallow-soup stage, and painted the rest with a vodka and food color gel. To fit in my cake carrier, tiny house was put in a separate container with a little powdered sugar to keep from sticking...so it still had a little on it by the time I was able to take a shot of the finished product. I brought my cake in for my coworkers to enjoy, and sadly don't have any thing to show of the ensuing cake-carnage. But oh, there was carnage. Of the cakey kind. My coworkers love and hate me for such baking projects. :) Hopefully next year I'll have more time to do things, but I really couldn't be happier with my entry for this year.
