Description
I had so much fun making a cake last year, I just had to enter again. It was definitely a lot more time consuming this year, as the cake is way more detailed, but that's just what makes it fun. I chose Meow Remix because I simply could not resist the challenge of making all those cute little kitties. That, and I tend to like to make insanely detailed cakes that end up driving me crazy. :P
It was really difficult to find time to work on the cake as I'm currently working 50+ hours a week, sometimes 12 hours a day (restaurant life is tough). So, it took about 2 1/2 weeks, working on it for 2-3 hours a night. Hooray for weekends! I was actually freaking out that I wouldn't finish on time, so the last day I did an all nighter, finishing on Monday morning.
To make the cake, I started out by coloring all the fondant. I then just started making the many, many, many pieces for the design. I did have a problem with my grey color though, it turned green when it dried, so I had to remake the conveyor belts. It ended up being a lot more difficult than I expected, making this design onto a flat surface. There is a lot more depth to the design than I thought, which gave me some challenges, but that's what I love about each cake I make. It's a new learning experience. I made basically all the fondant pieces first, then baked the cake on the last day and put them all on. The cake is a simple white pudding cake with vanilla buttercream, covered in fondant. Everything is made out of fondant except for the cactus spikes which are gumpaste. I used petal dust on some of the pieces to give some shadow, and the orange background lines and ladders were made from royal icing. I finally convinced my parents to buy me some vodka, and mixed it with gel color to paint the cat faces. Although it was stressful at times, I loved making this cake and am thrilled with how it came out. I did go a little crazy with the details (like trying to make each strand of yarn identical to the design), and it was kinda insane how small some of the pieces were ( I used tweezers a lot), but I really had a lot of fun. The cake was delicious and my family enjoyed eating the cake as much as I enjoyed making it. This was such a great experience, I can't wait for next year!
