Description
My first attempt for Threadcakes 2012, and time to kick things up a notch. I don't normally do much in the way of 3D cakes, so this was a challenge. I went for a vanilla sponge with strawberry jam and buttercream filling. I used my adjustable pans to get the neat squares, then started stacking and carving. Lacking any proper dowels, I improvised with drinking straws, which lead to a few scary moments when the whole thing looked like it was coming down.
Covering it was tricky, I used strips of fondant rather than an all-over coverage, which required some precise work with a scalpel. Once it was all covered, I started painting on the lines and figuring out how the hell I was going to put the lid and paper trays on (cocktail sticks were the answer). Right around that time was the moment I realised the base was entirely the wrong colour, so that needed repainting.
Next the cutest part of the endeavour, all the kittens! They weren't crazy about staying upright, so there there were another few hairy moments. Eventually, everything was on, the kittens held together and the copier didn't fall over.
Turned out I had quite a lot of cake and frosting left over, so my table wound up being covered in kitten-head cakepops.
The whole lot got brought in to be shared with my colleagues, turns out they're A-OK with decapitating cats with their teeth!
