Cake Is Awesome! cake by Christopher Polt

Description

I made the body out of three 8" round yellow cakes, wrapped in buttercream frosting and off-white fondant. The chocolate on top is a ganache that I let thicken somewhat and gently encouraged to drip down the sides (with a couple of frenzied trips to the fridge to keep them from falling too far). I piped on the eyes and smile with black icing. I molded the arms out of fondant, which I wrapped around wood skewers and allowed to harden. I carved the guitar out of rice krispies treats, wrapped the deck in red fondant, and painted it with red coloring gel to make it glossy. I coated the neck in think chocolate ganache and, once everything was dry, I added details in white fondant (head, bridge, buttons) and piped black icing for the strings and pegs. I cut the lightning bolts out of white fondant, attached them to wood skewers, covered them with yellow icing, and let them dry. I attached them to the guitar, ran a skewer down the guitar neck, and inserted the other end into a fondant base to stabilize the whole thing (which was much heavier than I thought it would be!). When I assembled the cake I had to add an extra skewer behind the guitar to keep it from falling. The cake was tasty - but also tooth-achingly sweet beyond all reason. The whole process took 3 days (1 to bake, cool, and frost the cakes; 1 to make the fondant, cover the cake, and ask myself, "What on earth are you doing?" while pondering the various disasters that might occur during assembly; and 1 to make the guitar, arms, and details and put everything together). I've never worked with fondant before, so this was wicked fun! I concur with my cake friend - cake is awesome!
