Look ma, no fondant! (this cake was made entirely without fondant. mostly because I have heard it tastes gross but also because I wanted to do it old school).
This cake was based on one of my favourite Threadless designs! It was actually one of the first Threadless t-shirts I ever purchased and I have it still. In fact, I created my cake directly from my t-shirt! Yeah!
I started off with a chocolate sheet cake - I made two 13x9 cakes, planning on making a layer cake (because I love layer cakes!) but I ended up dropping half of the second one as I was moving it to the counter to cool. One sheet cake it is!
Once my buttercream frosting was done and my sheet cake cooled, I frosted the cake a couple times and let it get a bit of a crust and then smooth it out with a sheet of paper towel. I then mixed up some pink and covered the sheet cake again a couple times and patted it down. Then I made some brown/black for the tree branch, which took a lot of adding this colour and that as well as adding more icing sugar before getting a similar colour (I had to use half of a contained or the brown with some blue and a little bit of red).
Then next step was making the little peaches, which I made from the remains of the spilled cake, kind of like peach-shaped cake pops! Well, without the stick, so not really a cake pop at all. I mixed some of the frosting with the crumbly cake bits and smooshed them into a small dish to get a round shape and popped them out, carved them a bit and then frosted them in two different shades of pink.
I piped on the tree branch and then placed the peaches in roughly the right spots on the cake. I added some green leaves (which I had coloured and bagged earlier) and then realized that I was running out of frosting. Bugger!
I made some more frosting, a half batch, using less vanilla in order to keep the colour a more creamy white for the peach-hugging cuties. I pipped on the nudes, tried patting them down like the sheet cake, but it didn't work as well so they are a bit bumpy. I then did their hair and outlines using the same colour I used for the tree branch and leaf outlines.
E voila! 12 or so hours later, my first ever attempt at making a Threadcake was complete! What fun!
