Well, back again!
After procrastinating for almost a year on which design to do, i ended up not only leaving it till the last minute but also went with one that i almost did last year. I felt in the mood for a structural challenge so decided to channel my childhood and go for the gravity defying Falcor based design 'NeverEnding Solo'.
I decided, (stupidly, as it would turn out) to try and carve the body AND the guitar out of cake. A lesson was quickly learned as i hacked into the cake and realised that wasn't going to happen!
However, time was not on my side and so i had to work with what i had and basically ended up carving his body into the left side and front of the cake.
I left a supporting structure of cake at the back to help support the newly imagined rice crispie guitar and planned to have the background razzamataz and smoke be supported by that side of the cake.
I printed off a large copy of the design to help with scale and made the guitar out of rice crispie mix. I then covered that and since it was very warm here and it was looking a bit soft, i put it in the freezer to harden up, and this is where a second lesson was learned.
The icing had a serious case of the sweats in the freezer and had a consistency close to that of mucus!
Binning that, i added some Tylo powder to the rest of the orange fondant to help it harden and made a slightly scaled down guitar.
The head was made using the rest of the cursed rice crispie mix and marzipan, which i attached to the top using the main pole in the centre of the cake and 2 wooden skewers strategically placed. These skewers and central pole are the only non-edible supports in the cake.
I decided to cover him in fur and scales because his scales were always my favourite thing about him! I dusted the scale parts with pearlescent powders to add to the effect.
The glasses and Orin were made out of gum paste.
I then made the arms out of marzipan and used royal icing to stick them and the ear in place, i used tooth picks to hold them in position until they were rock solid, and then removed the toothpicks and covered the limbs in fondant fur and scales. I painted the tattoo on using vodka mixed with powder colours.
As i started to put everything onto the cake, a third lesson was learned. Gravity is mean and i don't like her.
The mouth had closed slightly and the chin had moved down so the gap between the Orin necklace and the guitar was now non existent. It got on there, but it was a squeeze!
I worked on this cake sporadicly for 5 days and since everybody wanted to eat it before it grew real fur, i had to forego the background jazz and smoke. But i got it to a point i was relatively happy with and quite frankly, enjoyed hacking into the beast!
