My Favorite Pattern cake by Tina Lee

Description

I chose this particular shirt because it reminded me of all the ladybugs I had in my garden this year that protected my harvest of veggies from those dreaded plant juice sucking aphids. So I dedicate this cake to them.

This cake took me about a week to complete. I had gone to farmers market the Friday before and bought some very yummy cherry's. I had been dying to bake something and a pie just wont do this time. So I whipped up a vanilla cake and cut up the cherry's and diced them up and tossed them into the batter. I reserved some of them to put in the filling.

While the cake cooled I sat at my computer watching the DIY network on kitchen renovations ( my kitchen sorely needs a face lift) making the little ladybugs out of gum paste. After a couple of epic failures I finally got one that I felt was worthy.

For the frosting I wanted to try something other than regular rolled fondant or butter icing. That's when I came across a recipe for liquid fondant. So I melted the sugar added the corn syrup and held my breath when I poured it onto the cake. At first it went smooth then as soon as the sugary concoction hit the cake it began to cool and of course started to not look so smooth, but I forged onward and completed the pour and after letting it set to a firmness that seemed ok I piped on the black dots.

All in all this was fun. I finished it just in time to have my girls invite a few of their friends over and they had a cake fest! I woke up in the morning to find not even a crumb was left behind. Just the poor ladybug, painting the air.
