Description
Hi
It has been over a year that I discovered «Threadcakes ».
I was WoWed by the designs and learned a few tricks by looking at the previous contest, thanks to huge talent out there.
I said to myself, 2012, I would like to try one out.
It is about 2 years now, that I do cake designing as an hobby and passion.
I went for “Jonah And The Technicolor Whale” by Andrew Wilhite.
As I am a graphic designer and I also knew about the story of Jonah.
I wanted to go beyond the beautiful exciting design of Andrew Wilhite.
My objective was, to create a bible cake, as it is a bible story.
So I read the story, to find a few ideas and crammed the lot, into 5 images, before, the moment where, Jonah is getting swallowed.
Hoping that the 5 images, will explain, how on earth, did Jonah reach into the whale’s belly.
Here are the steps I did :
Day 1 :
2 hours : sketching and putting in place 5 images and the original drawing “Jonah And The Technicolor Whale” by Andrew Wilhite, with " adobe illustrator".
I, wanted the 5 images, to stay simple and not to over power the main design. So, I made the choice to work in black and white on each image and to put a little color element in 2D to remind “The Technicolor Whale”
Day 2 :
3 hours : coloring, rolling, cutting out gumpaste elements for 5 images and painting with black food coloring and other 2 D elements. I also used a black edible pen.
Day 3 :
Baked two cakes, a cherry and a hazelnut sponge and prepared two creams, cherry frosting and hazelnut swiss meringue buttercream and a syrup.
Cut, carved and coated the cakes with cream. The cherry cake I added big sugar non pareils, in the cream to remind the colors of the whale. Left the two cakes, in the fridge for a night.
Day 4 :
Covered the cakes with fondant. To do a bible cake. Painted it, to make it look a little old. Did marks for pages. Added the 5 gumpaste images that were painted on the left cake page. Preparing the gumpaste colors, for the whale. On the right cake page, started to do the whale. Added colored gumpaste pieces on top of each other to shape the whale. Finished by modeling Jonah with fondant.
Wow finish just before leaving on holiday ;)
Hope you enjoyed looking and reading, thank you ;0)
I enjoyed doing it.
I was very happy to have succeeded in doing and finishing the cake just before leaving.
I will renew the experience next year, hoping I will find time.
