I've been a fan of Threadless for years, and I've followed Cakewrecks since the beginning, so I can't believe I completely forgot about Threadcakes until the last second this year! Thankfully, I caught Jen's Sunday Sweets post a couple weeks back, and I had the house to myself this (rare, workfree) weekend. Oh, the destruction that was our kitchen the last two days!
The cake itself is a basic chocolate from scratch with a fresh strawberry filling--which turned out to be a big mistake when I went to carve it and messed up my reservoir! Transferring to a fresh cake board on the second day improved the cake's appearance, but the interior just never cleaned up how i would have liked. It is frosted in a standard buttercream, with about a tablespoon of cocoa added purely for coloring purposes.
I chose this pattern because I thought the picture frame style would be fun to convert to a three dimensional art work. The shape obviously lends itself to a round cake, but the challenge to it was adding the height.
All decorations are gum paste. I hand carved all the trees, mountains, and clouds. I marbled the gum paste to create my version of the water color effect in the original. in order to maintain the cartoonish look, i traced all features with buttercream, adding a slight wobble to maintain the imperfect lines.
