RISE OF THE BLACK FAIRIES cake by Margoth Mae

Description

I loved the t-shirt design as soon as I saw it. And nothing says cake like black fairies riding giant spiders. I immediately pictured the cake in my mind. It was very challenging, and ambitious. It was going to be perfectly awesome. And… there was no time for that. Plus, I’m not the beaker, my boyfriend is. He tends to laugh about my ideas. I don’t know the materials like he does, so they end up being unrealistic. So… we came up with this other idea. You know, the one in the pictures above. Also a very good idea.

The cake team:
Arturo Esquer Kasten: Beaker, artist, decorator, the man with the plan.
Me, Margoth Magaña: Assistant, picture taker (can’t call myself a photographer, you can see why), writing this.

The cake:
Super moist fluffy vanilla cake with cajeta filling. Handmade fondant, from scratch. Vanilla frosting made from scratch as well. They’re all Arturo’s recipes. All cake is edible. Only thing that was not edible were two small plastic straws used to hold the black fairy’s wings.

The problems:
Biggest issue was time. We found out late about the contest. Plus as the date was coming closer Arturo got loaded with work so we could not get started. We started out Friday 10 of August, just two days before the limit date.
Second problem we had was the spider’s legs. We wanted to use as less non-edible things as possible so we decided to use only fondant to do the legs. Now we know that the best thing would have been to use some solid material as base for the legs. We made the legs on Friday and let them dry over night. Saturday came along, most of the cake was done and we realize we had 4 pairs of very fragile legs, one of them already broken. As we tried to place the legs a couple legs more broke. We had no time to re-do them. So we ended up with a four legged spider.

The result:
A very delicious spider. We are happy with the outcome after all. We know we could have done it a lot better with a little more time. We learned a lot from this experience and we’re planning to apply it all in next year’s cake contest.
