The Sin cake by Eli Tolliver

Description

I chose this design because I liked the movement and the contrast of color. When I first heard about the competition I got all excited about decorating a cake but then procrastinated until the last week of entry. I am currently working at a bakery and we had a lot of cake orders due on the weekend I planned on finishing this cake. The cake was already baked and carved but I had spent so much time on the cakes at work that I had almost given up on finishing this cake.
Monday morning I went to work and saw my sad unfinished cake in the refrigerator and decided to check the competition rules and, hoorah, I had 10 hours to complete the cake.
Anyway, less about and more about the cake.
The cake is a basic white cake with chocolate Swiss buttercream, covered in black fondant with white fondant decoration. Carving and covering was easy but the cake was too cold when it was covered so it begin to sweat. Gooey black sweat that got on my fingers and left smudges on the white fondant. Luckily, one of the joys of cake decorating is that most things can be covered/fixed so I blended the smudges and turned it into shading and all was right with the world.
The shading was done in black petal dust and gel food coloring diluted in cheap vodka. The white outline was done in piped royal icing.
Overall I'm pretty pleased with the cake. I'm glad that I rechecked the entry time and didn't give up on this cake.
