Duck Tiles I m Not Always Temperamental cake by Geoffrey Leblond

Description

As soon as I saw this design I knew I needed to reproduce it exactly. Obviously once I started I realized I was being le stupide and decided to tone down my ambitions.

I started with making a single cookie cutter out of an aluminum strip. I'll take any excuse to combine the hardware store with the kitchen.

Then I started working on the cakes. Once I had decided to stick to a single sized mini-Donald, I had thought long and hard (i.e. last minute) to colour the cake and cut it out to the different shapes of the design. To save on cake, I decided to use some left over strips as molds for the legs, and be creative with the rest of the shapes I needed. My sister stand mixer came in handy for this step.

Once the cake was done I started with the decorating. My sister was awesome enough to have already mixed the dark blue fondant. Covering the cake was tricky and a pain. Because of the spaces between the arms and legs, it was difficult to cover all of the sides. I also missed my mark when I slapped on the fondant, so I had to stitch together the right foot.

The rest of it was long but relatively simple. I cut out a bunch of coloured fondant Donalds, then arranged them half-hazardly on the top. As I went I cleaned up the edges and added in detail, like the tongue and buttons.

In the end it wasn't exactly what I wanted (cakes never are, are they?) but I'm very happy with the general look of it :)
