This is the very first online competition I've ever entered! I first started by spending a lot of time going through all of the amazing designs! (That definitely took a while) In the end I chose the "God Save the Villain" design. The design really intrigued me, and I knew it would be a great challenge! This proved to be even more difficult because the face is portrayed on an angle. If it were to have been a straight on view, recreating it would have been much simpler! But, all the more of a challenge!
Naturally I started by baking. I made lemon cake with a fresh basil buttercream and blueberry jam filling. The colors really complemented the design of the cake as well! After stacking the cake I began the process of carving away until I was left with a shape I was confident that I could create the image with.
While the cake firmed up in the refrigerator, I made my very first batch of modeling chocolate! Luckily, it turned out great and I used it to create features such as the nose, hair and crown. Another first for me was creating the jewels which I made out of poured sugar! I would have never though I'd be making dangling earrings out of sugar!
Once I built up facial features with buttercream, I covered the cake and began "aging" the face by adding in all of the lines and wrinkles. Next was the fun phase of adding in color! The coloring was done with a mix of airbrushing and hand-painting. From there it I just had to give her hair and her accessories!
I really learned a lot making this cake. Everyone that go to see and eat it with me loved it! I hope you all love it just as much! :-)
