Description
The Composition by Viv Hui is an incredible image! This hybrid typewriter piano provided lots of fine details perfect for a great 3D cake challenge!
I began construction with my signature spelt flour vanilla cake and layered it with pistachio swiss meringue buttercream. Once the cake was stacked and sculpted, I masked it with a white chocolate buttercream, which becomes hard once it sets overnight.
As to not compromise the structural integrity of the cake, it was first created as one solid block. I carved out sections as I saw fit and the only inedible supports used were the two bamboo skewers which hold up the ruler. The thin "metal" bar hanging from the ruler is also a bamboo skewer covered in fondant, but it does not function as a support.
Once the cake was covered in tinted fondant, I created all of the edible elements on the spot in order to properly fit together. The sheet music is a thin sheet of fondant that was hand painted with food colouring and a final dusting of edible silver lustre dust brought the metal elements to life. Construction took about 16 hours from start to finish and the cake measured 12" x 10" x 10".
The Composition Cake was completed just in time for my sister in laws 40th birthday, which is why I chose to customize the sheet music. I chose the song "Last Night When We Were Young" by Harold Arlen. This project functioned as a wonderful personal challenge and a delicious way to celebrate Jessica's birthday!
Party on!
