Hi Threadcakes Community!
I just want to start out by saying that I am SO excited to have completed an entry for this year! I found out about Threadcakes last year, but psyched myself out of competing, telling myself I wasn't good enough. I finally wised up and realized that I CAN do this and that I have to give it a shot before I can quit...right?
Well, to tell you the truth, I almost did quit. Adventure Time is one of my favorite shows and BMO is my favorite character, hands down. When I saw the BMO tee was game for the competition, I just knew I had to do it for my entry! I originally planned to make a 3D cake, but due to poor planning/executing on my part, it was a hot mess from the jump. I almost threw it all away and said "Screw it!", but with a deep breath, some extra frosting and some careful maneuvering, I was able to salvage BMO in the form of a 2D entry. This is the first shaped, character cake I have ever done!
BMO is comprised of white vanilla cake that I dyed 5 different colors with gel dye. I decided that plain cake was boring and that B-MO needed to be colorful! I swirled the colors together in the pan before baking, to get a cool tie-dyed effect. After cooling the layers, I attempted to I stack them into a 3D BMO. I quickly realized that my plan just was NOT working, so I re-grouped, re-positioned, and re-purposed my materials into a 4 layer, rectangular shape. I crumb-coated it and set in the fridge to set. I made some marshmallow fondant and dyed it sky blue with gel dye. After letting the fondant rest for a moment, I took the cake out of the fridge and covered it in the blue fondant. I decided to expand on the original design, so I also made legs and arms out of the blue fondant, so as to create a more complete version of B-MO like the one found in the cartoon. I made BMO's face and all of the accents out of fondant, including the markings for the speakers and the BMO lettering found on the sides. I attached all the accent pieces with a little bit of egg white. I then outlined the face and buttons in black icing, and as the final touch, I took the same icing and piped the phrase "It's BMO Time" along the bottom of the cake board.
This cake took me approximately 8 hours over the course of one afternoon/evening.
