Description
I picked this design because I wanted to work with something related to the Avengers, and this illustration really spoke to me. The designer was super kind and sent me the original file, so that I could print it out and blow it up to the size I needed (11"x16").
I started working on this a few weeks ago, first working on the yellow pieces, which seemed the easiest, in fondant. I colored the fondant to match the color of the print as closely as I could, then placed it on a pre-rolled piece of hand-dyed black fondant.
Next came the red. The major pieces were done in red fondant, but the smaller detail pieces had to be piped with royal icing. This was my first time working with royal icing. It ended up being a lot harder than I thought it would be! I also hand piped the little white details with white royal icing.
The design was coming together, but I wanted to add something extra, so I cut out the letters "Iron Man" to make it look like a comic book cover, and hand placed them, then piped over them with white royal icing.
The cake I chose to make this out of was vanilla, with vanilla french buttercream filing, and red and black ganache. I was originally going to add yellow but it looked better with just the red in the end. I covered the edges with black, but before I placed the final piece, I put in a mini led party light to make Iron Man's arc reactor.
This is my first entry into a competition, and I really enjoyed working on it!
