Legendary War cake by Travis Stevens

Description

This is the first time for us entering this competition, well, any competition for that matter.

Neither one of us are bakers or have had any cake decorating instruction of any kind.

We decided to go with a highly ambitious cake design for our fist ever cake competition. We went with an elevated cake and added an element of water to the cake itself. In the base of the cake we hid a water pump and had pvc piping running up through the middle of the cake adding water to the pod and creating an overflowing waterfall. the water was guided to the bottom by poured sugar.

The main cake was a cinnamon accented vanilla bean white cake with a white chocolate ganache filling. The crumb coating was vanilla buttercream. The chess board portion of the cake was made with puffed rice cereal treats then hand cut and stacked to match the image. The rice crispies were then coated in melted white chocolate which seemed to take a really long time. Then alternating squares where hand painted with black food coloring. The pond flooring is colored gum paste with the trees being a mixture of gum paste and modeling chocolate.

The chess pieces are hand carved clay then silicon molded to allow us to make poured chocolate molds. Each character was first carved into clay, then baked, then molded into silicon, and finally chocolate was poured into each one with hand painted accents.

The earth that was actually free floating fondant was a half and half of modeling chocolate and fondant with airbrushed accents.

In total the entire cake took two of us 9 hours to complete.
