Description
I recently bought some t-shirts from Threadless and I stumbled across the Threadcakes contest. I knew my daughter and I would HAVE to do it - just for fun! We chose a few designs, but settled on "A Day in the Blocky Life", as all my kids love minecraft!
I am a total amateur for cakes and have never used rolled fondant before, but knew it would give the right look to the cake, so we decided this was the perfect opportunity to try it. We used store bought cake mixes and frosting along with the fondant and various candy and used both of those to create the to make the figures. The trees are rice krispy tops and trunks are stick pretzels wrapped in rice krispy and rolled fondant. The pretzels supported the trees really well.
We had two 'casualties' from design to finished product - the 'bat cave' had to be filled in to support the weight of the cake.(I used wafer cookies) and the glass candy water was too dark to see the squid underneath and just didn't work how I thought - so unfortunately it got scraped...everything else was done and I didn't have time/ability to figure out a different option. But it was fun - and good learning experience! And besides...we wanted to EAT it!
We baked one day and decorated the next day. It took us about 5-6 hours total. My daughter is the artist and added all the detail touches as well as making the creeper, fishing dude and squid. She's awesome!
Next time we will make all the details and figurines, trees, glass candy, etc. ahead of assembly day so any problems can be addressed.
All in all - we had a TON of FUN!
My kids declared my cake "TOTALLY LEGIT" and we dug in! Yum!
