Finally the time has come, I’ve been waiting for some time to submit this challenge, given that is my first time participating. I decided to participate in the 3D cake-sculpting contest. In turn, I choose the beauty immortal design due to its amazing complexity.
The whole cake took three days to finish. In the first 2 days I had to make sure that most of the ornaments were ready, these include the flowers, the leaves, the mushrooms, the bird and the butterfly. They had to spend one night to dry due to the use of gum paste, which I had to make from scratch.
After, I started the baking process, which involved a vanilla layer cake and took a day to complete. In addition, I made the filling for the cake out of white chocolate ganache flavored with orange zest. I baked two 9 inch cakes and assembled on top of each other, which I then filled with the chocolate ganache. I let the cake rest in the fridge so it was easier to sculpt. This process had to be repeated several times. After the shape of the skull was finalized I brushed the cake with unflavored gel. Likewise, I covered the cake with modeling chocolate that can be controlled and sculpted with more ease. The outer layer of the cake was covered with white fondant to finalize the details of the skull.
Finally on the last day, after all the single elements of the cake were finished I started to assemble the cake. Lastly, I airbrushed the cake with royal blue to give the cake contrast and color. After everything was done we cut the cake and tried it. The combination of flavors was fantastic. My husband, my son and nice can attest to this. The orange zest exalts the taste, which gives it a fantastic flavor.
