Breathe cake by Shani Christenson

Description

Well THAT was fun!! Who knew that sculpting a 3D equilateral triangle in cake would be so tricky!! Oh and make it appear to float while you're at it, sure, no problem.... Ok so this is my very first cake contest, aaaaand my very first gravity defying cake. I chose this design because I wanted to take the opportunity to challenge myself and do something new. Well, check and check!! I am normally booked on orders and I rarely get to do something for fun. So of course I had to make a cake for Threadcakes! Luckily I had a break in my schedule in time. I suppose this cake could be looked at as fairly simple being that it doesn't have a lot of sculpted details or fancy painting etc. But to achieve the equilateral triangle in cake was quite a feat for me, especially since it was actually split in half. And while I realize that cakes with structural supports are not encouraged for the contest I felt like it needed to be floating or it just wouldn't be true to the design. So obviously this cake required some structural support, time for me to learn something new! YAY! I used a wooden board for the base with a 3/8" threaded rod fastened to it. The cakes were supported on it by a nut and washer that were threaded on to the rod at the proper heights. The cake boards then sat on those. The threaded rod did go through the middle of the cake so I covered the rod with a plastic drinking straw to keep it from touching the cake. So the rod structure and the wire that the flying birds were on were the only non-edible items on the cake (besides the cake boards, but those don't count, right?). It was a vanilla cake with vanilla swiss buttercream and dark chocolate espresso ganache. I covered it in black fondant and cut out the mountains and moon from white fondant. I airbrushed the rainbow colors on the mountains then hand painted the details with black food coloring. The design is on all three sides of the cake. Equilateral all the way... oh except not on the bottom because that would just be obsessive. The birds are fondant on a floral wire, I only put them on the front of the cake. The black drips are also fondant attached to the bottom of the board. I wanted the cake to appear as the original design does on a whitish background so I tried to get a seamless look to the background of the photo using a large piece of white paper. I also covered the threaded rod at the base of the cake with white paper so it would disappear on the white background. So there ya go, that's the magic (not so much) behind the cake. Oh and my little guy was soooo happy that we got to eat this one!
