Description
This is my second year entering threadcakes, and since my sister's birthday falls in the middle of October it seemed the perfect excuse for a fun cake. This was a whisky ginger sponge, to match the ginger kitty, with whisky buttercream filling, and all edible sugarpaste (fondant) decoration.
I made this cake over two days, it probably took about 8-10 hours of actual work, plus chilling time. On the first day I made and baked the cake layers, made the buttercream and coloured the sugarpaste.
On the second day I got on with the fun bit! I filled, stacked, carved and crumb coated the cake, then covered it with orange sugarpaste, which I textured a little using a scouring pad. The the legs and paws were modelled from sugarpaste stiffened with CMC and glued on. With the basic shape there I cut out the details (stripes, belly socks etc.) from thinly rolled sugarpaste and stuck these on. The paws chest and face were textured with a modelling tool, and the nose and paws were painted to add a bit of shading. Once all the details were on the whole cake got a light wash of paint to blend the colours together.
With the cake finished I covered the board, and added a 'happy birthday' message, using textured ropes of sugarpaste to look like an unravelling ball of wool. Getting this to loop like a continuous strand tuned out to be the trickiest part!
The cake went down very well, and provided a needed bit of 'hair of the dog' for the hungover birthday girl!
