Don t be a Party Boober cake by Halliegh Marston

Description

This year was my second year entering Threadcakes. I’ve been doing cakes for about 4 years now but nothing sculpted on large scales.
I chose “Don’t be a party Boober” because I have a weakness for puppets. My parents used to make them.

Boober is made of 3 main mediums. His body is devils food chocolate cake shaped from 4 6inch rounds and half a mini ball pan and piped with buttercream for his “fur”. His head and the wall he is leaning on are sculpted from rice krispie treats while his skin, hair, hat and arms are sculpted from modeling chocolate.

To assemble his body I first started with my silver 16inch cake base and a 13 inch center dowel. I built Boober over the dowel. One cake down with chocolate buttercream and added another cake layer on top. For every 2 layers of cake I insert 5 straws and a round of cardboard to support the weight up the upper layers. Once his body was build I crumbcoated the entire cake in chocolate buttercream then piped on the “fur” and waited for that to crust.
While his body crusted I covered his head in modeling chocolate, made from candy melts and corn syrup, then began sculpting his arms.

At this point his body had crusted so I added the head and lightly airbrushed a pale green over the entire figure. Then assembled the wall he is leaning on. This is rice krispie treats covered in white fondant then hand painted with the streaks of color.

Now we have come to the final stages. First I added his arms. I needed those on first to see how long his hair would need to be since it had to cover most of his shoulders.
Once his arms were in place I began his hair. His hair is red and orange modeling chocolate mixed together to make orange. For his hair I rolled out balls then rolled those into long carrot shapes (fat on one side and pointed on the other) and attached to his head while still soft. I did this in 4 layers to build out volume.

Once his hair was finished I moved on to what ended up being my favorite part, his hat. Boober’s hat is also made from modeling chocolate. I chose to do so much of my sculpting in modeling chocolate because it is so versatile. It doesn’t stretch or distort, its flexible and it blends back into itself so beautifully unlike fondant or gumpaste. It also doesn’t take quite as long to firm up so no waiting for pieces to dry.
For the hat I cut out 2 large circles. One I left flat for the brim and embossed lines into it. The other I folded in on its self to create bulk and folds like fabric. I put the brim on his head first and positioned it just over where his eyes would be. I then added the cap part of the hat. Once that was where I liked It I added some lines to make it look like wrinkled fabric. Then Viola! “Don’t be a party Boober” is complete!!

2 hours later he is devoured by my nieces as part of a birthday celebration for my mother.

I really enjoyed making Boober in cake form. I think next time I'll plan it all out a little better and take more time on the details to really make the cake resemble the graphic a little more.
