A Pixel of My Childhood cake by Natasha Baker

Description

Well, I have bitten the bullet so to speak and here is my 2D entry for this year. I have been watching and admiring for the last 2 years and have finally made one, yay!

The main difficulty in this competition is choosing from the thousands of brilliant designs. At one point I had about 20 I liked, but managed to narrow it down to this design, mainly due to its sheer awesomeness and challenging angles.

I started off by making an 11 by 7 inch rich chocolate cake and covering it in coffee icing. I then covered it in white fondant and began making my gaming plaques.

This was one of those cakes where I vastly underestimated the time it would take to cut out the image. I created the design by cutting around each outer shape on my printed paper template with a craft knife, then using this to cut around the 1mm thick icing.
I then layered up the plaques for each colour, creating the hard angled look I was aiming for.

By the end I was basically seeing everything in pixel form.

I finally airbrushed the cake and lined up the plaques in the right places referring back to my paper template.

Thanks for taking a look at my entry.
