Pirate Owls cake by Erin Wieglenda Cronbaugh

Description

Pirate owls was the design I chose this year, I just loved these little guys flying through the air in their pirate ship. The ship is banana cake with salted caramel butter cream filling and chocolate ganache icing. Each owl head is made from modeling chocolate and then wrapped in fondant. The bodies are a fondant/gumpaste mix and have no internal structure. All of their accessories are also fondant/gumpaste. Everything is edible including the sails (rice paper) and the masts (white chocolate). The crowns nest basket is fondant but the bottom was filled with chocolate and set on a solid chocolate mast for support. The wings and flag are also rice paper. The only non edible part is the support, which is a 1/4 inch threaded metal rod that the cake board sits on, no internal structure. The backdrop is foam core board covered in fondant and then airbrushed with food coloring. The base board is also covered in fondant and sponge painted with food coloring. It took about 40 hours total, partly because Ive just moved into a new kitchen and was a bit disorganized!
