Another last-minute Threadcakes cake. *sigh* Perhaps someday I will save myself a ton of stress and actually start on my cake early, so I’m not submitting it on the last day…. Again.
My entry from last year was my absolute favorite cake of all the cakes I’ve made, so I wanted to do something similar this year. I selected Fantasy Space because it has all the elements I like. It’s very whimsical and fun, and is a very intricate design, and it has mushrooms… I love mushrooms.
The design is monochromatic, but I could tell it would be amazing if it was fully colored, so I decided to challenge myself and add my own colors to it.
And so, I started the same way I always do. I printed out a template of the design and began forming all the pieces, starting with Mr. Rubber Duck. I formed everything out of plain white gumpaste and fondant, since I was going to paint them later. These pieces were quite challenging, but I’m actually pretty happy that I was able to make them look pretty similar to the design. I was terrified of sculpting the horse and the old man’s face, but thankfully they weren’t as hard as I imagined they’d be. Like usual, the hardest part was sculpting the pieces to look like they are at the same angle as the picture, yet also get them all to fit tightly against each other. That bed was a headache.
Once done with the pieces, I started painting, which is my favorite part. I tried to make it very bright and colorful, because I just felt that dreams should be vivid and full of color. I really had fun with the rainbow swirls. Its hard to tell from the picture, but I did paint the mechanical fish with copper luster dust, the robot with silver dust, the stars with gold dust, and Pegasus’s wings with pearl luster dust. It is definitely much cooler in person.
When everything was painted, I finally made the cake. It is a vanilla cake with strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries baked inside, and is iced in Italian meringue buttercream and covered in fondant. It is placed on a fondant-covered board, and both were painted to have a sort of galaxy/space look. Again, like usual, sticking all the pieces onto the cake was a pain, but thankfully they all fit. I did have to use some supports to let everything dry overnight, but once those were removed, there was nothing inedible on or in the cake.
This cake definitely does go down in the record books as the cake with the most breakages. But… that does tend to happen when you try to defy gravity. You can see from the side-view pictures that a lot of the objects are sticking off the side of the cake. I was able to fix everything though, and you can barely tell that anything went wrong. The vine with the dreamcatcher is my pride and joy. :)
Although stressful and time-consuming, I had a lot of fun and am so happy to have completed my 5th Threadcakes cake! I think the cake turned out amazing and I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to enter this competition again. I can’t wait for next year!
Oh, and the cake was absolutely delicious! :D
