Description
I chose this shirt because I really wanted to chose a design where I could use multiple techniques, and to include some sort of "special effect." I also wanted to do a 3d sculpted cake, as I have never created a cake with an internal structure such as this.
I started with piping some royal icing "structures" that were going to be used as added buildings, I actually didn't use as many as these as I originally thought, but they ended up adding some more contrast to the top of this structure, so that it wasn't so dark.
The structure for this cake was made of pvc pipe, an adapter and a flange which was screwed into a wood base.
I baked many different flavors (lol) as I had many orders to bake for , so I used extra batter; wedding white, red velvet and cookies n' cream. The cakes consisted of 4 8" rounds, and 3 6" rounds. I used the extra cake that I carved off for the formation of the gas mask.
He was then carved, the cake gas mask was added and he was showered in yummy ganache. Fondant details were added and the bottom of his gas mask, which was made of rice krispy treats was attatched to the pvc pipe and covered.
I kept the main center pvc long, so that it could be used as a chimney for the dry ice smoke effect.
He was painted with black gel color and black airbrush color. The brim of his "hat," lenses to gas mask, round side vents and some "chimneys" were all made of isomalt. Chimney/buildings were also made of modeling chocolate, gumpaste, fondant, and some royal icing and added details were painted with gel colors.
There is a drain that is hard to see in the pictures coming out of the back of his head with isomalt "oil" draining out.
The final effects of smoke were made using dry ice.
My son was the first to dig in, and our neighbors received huge chunks of him as well. lol
