Wild Tiger cake by Julie Cain

Description

I wasn't sure I'd have time to enter Threadcakes this year so I did a bit of multi-tasking. I was making a tiger cake for a friend's daughter so searched Threadless for a tiger design to use and luckily there was one that I loved.
My friend only wanted a small cake so I decided to try something new and paint the image onto a simple black round cake (with a surprise tiger print sponge inside!)
I considered covering the cake in white fondant then airbrushing black, but because I was painting onto it, I decided to use black fondant instead....and it was a bit of a nightmare, sticky and near impossible to smooth! Thankfully a slightly textured look suited a tiger cake!
Once it had dried I marked out a vague imprint of the tiger face and began to paint. I used cocoa butter and food colours mixed with a little white to make it easier to see on black. I love trying new things and I discovered I quite like painting!
I added Morgan's name (well it was her birthday cake!) and delivered it to the birthday girl. The last picture is a collage of the photos she sent me...she seemed to like her cake x
