I'm so excited to be submitting to Threadcakes for a third year! I don't even know where to start... I chose this design by Karen Hallion about a year ago. When I was looking at the designs, this really stood out to me. And now I have a new favorite artist! I really fell in love with Cinderella's dress. I loved how it was so billowy and had so much beautiful draping. I had success last year making a 2D Elsa and Anna and had ideas for how to use a similar technique for her dress.
I waited until a few important cakes I had lined up for people were out of the way. When it was finally time to get started - and I could barely sleep a couple of nights just thinking about it - I chose a half sheet cake because I wanted it to be big enough to really get the details. I've only done quarter sheet cakes for this contest in the past. I blew it up in Microsoft Word and played around with the size until I was happy.
The first thing I did was color my fondant. I decided to meld together everything I liked between the Threadless version of the design and Karen's original design that can be found elsewhere. Wilton cornflower blue was perfect for this design.
Then I started from the ground up. I made the basic shape of the Tardis and the basic shape of the dress and Cinderella's torso. From there I build upon it in thin layers.
To make her billowy dress, I used a technique where I make ropes out of fondant and piled it on the basic dress shape. Then after I was happy with that, I rolled out a thin layer of fondant and draped it over. I used my fingers and some fondant tools to gently make the billowy folds of the dress.
Something new I am playing around with this year is using petal dusts on my decorations. I used a lot of black to add depth to the Tardis and the princess' dress. I also used it to paint my background.
The background -- to make the background, I rolled out a large piece of cornflower blue fondant to let it dry. It took about five tries to get this right! I just wanted it to be perfect. After it had dried a few days, I flipped the background images and traced it onto parchment paper with pencil. Then I lightly rubbed the pencil onto the fondant. From there, I used petal dusts to “paint” the background. Then I added the lines with food color mixed with vodka. I made the clock face and the moon out of thin, white fondant.
For the cake, I baked a white almond sour cream cake, which easily and quickly makes a half sheet (12” x 14” cake). I stuck it into the freezer to set up for a few days.
Putting it all together was the easiest part. I made a five pound batch of my favorite buttercream. I didn’t even bother crumb coating this cake; instead, I just applied a thick coating of it. I used the hot knife method to get it smooth. I recruited my husband to help me get the background panel on because I was afraid that it would break. From there, I stuck on the Tardis and the princess. I wasn’t going to make a border, but it looked incomplete and I had plenty of left over icing. I used a Wilton #22 tip.
I am so happy with how this cake turned out and that I went for it! I am almost sad that it’s all over. We were going to take it to my niece’s birthday party, but we sadly all came down with the common cold. So we stayed home, and the rest will go with my husband to his work! I hope that they like cake! If you read this book of an entry – thank you!
