Le Passage des Morts Nouveaux cake by Julie Biell Manundo

Description

This is my first ever entry for Threadcakes. I've been wanting to join ever since but due to some reason, I never really got a chance. I have saved a few design even before the competition started and I must say that this is the design I find most interesting and challenging (not to mention that it's a design suitable for the upcoming halloween *grin*)

So basically the cake is in an upright position. I want to challenge myself and instead of doing it lying down I decided make it stand. I baked a sheet of chocolate cake and made dark chocolate ganache for the filling and frosting. I used a threaded rod for the support covered with foil. I also printed a copy of the design so I will have an idea of what the size of the cake will be.

I did the woman, crow and the skulls first out of fondant and let them dry. Unfortunately, they were too big for the cake so thecake was a bit crowded when it was finished.

For the background, I used template to cut-out the pieces and painted the branches using lemon extract and food color. I also cut-out silhouette of the reaper and stick it into the cake so I know where I will place all the black cloth pieces. I used the veiner tool for the reaper's cloth to create drapes. I did finishing touches on the skulls using mixture of lemon extract and black color and dusted them with silver dust (not visible in the picture though.. I suck at photography! haha!)

I'm pretty happy with how this cake turned out (although it's not what I pictured it to be) and my kids are happy they get to eat it. Not bad for my first Threadcakes experience.

Thanks for the opportunity and happy caking y'all!!
