WAITING FOR MY FISH cake by Mary Ellen Wade

Description

Hi all! After telling myself for a few years that I will decorate a cake for the Threadcakes contest I finally took the plunge. I typically just make cakes every so often for friends celebrating birthdays and other special occasions. My go-to type of decorating is painting on fondant but for this competition I was looking to broaden my horizons and attempt to do a 2D design with just cake and piping on a lot of frosting. The general consensus around the devourers of my cakes is frosting=yum! while fondant=no so much. This commitment is what chose me to pick the neon cat. I have no affinity for cats (honestly, I am a dog person) but this particular cat beckoned to be transformed into a cake.

I knew I wanted to do a chocolate cake because I was in the mood for a chocolate cake and I thought it would be a good blank canvas for this particular piece of artwork. I opted to not do a crumb coat for this same reason, instead choosing to free form my piping based off of the photo. The cat is the cake in this piece while the background is the decorated cake board, all done in just frosting.

This cake took about 2 nights(-ish) to decorate. I wanted the frosting to harden just a little bit so I could paint the moon the colors I wanted and to add the fine details to the cat’s face and body. In the end, it reminds me a wee bit of what it might look like if Grumpy Cat met Lisa Frank and decided to make a Trapper Keeper design together.
