Tyrannosaurus Walkman cake by Elizabeth Marek

Description

There where a million different entries that I thought about doing but I just kept coming back to this one. He's just so... RAD! I of course always mean to make my cakes small but they just end up being much larger than expected! I used a TON of cake for this guy and he was super heavy but delicious :)

I used all spice cake cuz hey, it's the holidays and I was in the mood! I used SMBC and some ganache as well. He is ALL CAKE except for the small amount of structure supporting the cake. The legs, tail, head etc are built up with cake crumbs combined with ganache to make sort of a cake clay. The same stuff cake pops are made out of! Yummy!

After carving little Rex, I covered him in some ganache to chill overnight. My original idea was to incorporate a working walkman into the cake itself but decided it would be much cooler if I made a cassette tape out of fondant and made it look like the cassette was being played! So I used a small cake effects motor that I got from Stacked http://www.stackedcakes.us.com/caketech.html
The motor is food safe and easily inserted into the cake but doesnt take up much space! I molded a small piece of fondant over the end of the motor to look like a gear from a cassette player. I molded the whole cassette player out of fondant with measurements based off of a real player so that I could actually insert the cassette into the deck and make it "play" (see video for this effect)

Rex was covered in Satin Ice fondant and painted with edible watercolors. I then airbrushed in some shadows and hand-painted black details and white highlights. The headphones are made from gumpaste and fondant as are all the other details. I tried to keep the lil' guy as much cake and edible materials as possible.

At the end of the project my lil daughter had a great time sampling the still-moist cake! You can watch the cutting in the second video. I hope you enjoy him! Thank you Threadcakes for continuing to put on such an awesome contest year after year!
