Mr Bunny cake by Elysia Smith

Description

Hi everyone! This is my first time doing a cake for Threadcakes and also my first time doing a 3D carved cake. I started looking through the designs and immediately knew I wanted to do "Mr. Bunny". I loved the colors! I have never done a 3D cake before and figured he would only require a simple structure. I used a threaded rod and boards to keep him off of the base which was foam core over masonite. Mr. Bunny was vanilla cake which I colored blue to match his colors. I'm not really good at visualizing things in 3D, so I used egg shaped pans to make his head. I originally baked only 2 halves, but then opted for a 3rd to add another layer of cake for height. He was filled with black cherry and raspberry buttercream which I also chose to compliment his colors. The carving was slow going for me since I was afraid I might cut off too much. After I was satisfied with the shape, I crumb coated him in buttercream and then covered him in ganache. I gave his eyes, cheeks, nose, and mouth a bit more shape with some fondant before covering him completely with Carma Massa Ticino fondant. His ears and whiskers are made out of gumpaste which I had made a few days prior to allow time to dry. He was painted with a mixture of gel colors and Everclear. I used candy melts to add the bits on his ears and cheeks which proved to be quite difficult due to them being so thin. The background is foamcore which I also painted with the gel color/alcohol mixture. My daughter watched the whole process of him being made and couldn't wait to eat him! He turned out quite delicious!
